Samaria Gorge, Crete

A popular yet challenging descent in Crete, is the Samaria Gorge hike, 16km long and part of the National Park of Greece in Western Crete. In the White Mountains, the gorge starts at an altitude of 1,250 m at the northern entrance, and ends at the shores of the Libyan Sea in the small village of Agia Roumeli. We arrived just before the park officially opened, and due to weather, the upper sections were not safe. So we took a boat to Agia Roumeli and walked up into the gorge past the Iron Gates, its most narrow section with heights reaching almost 1000 ft.
